City of God - Hero

I watched City of God last Saturday with Femke after having a delicious dinner ;). Very nice movie about the street criminality and gangs fighting each other in Rio de Janeiro. A very beautiful (but hard) movie with great cinematography. Definitely to be recommended!

And today I watched Hero with Boefje. I had heard it was a bit like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and indeed. It’s pretty similar, it also has that mysterious, legendary, and surrealistic feel to it. However, I think I liked the story from Hero better, and what impressed me most was the playing with colour, symbols, slow motion and the general artistic work of filming the story and the fights. It’s as if you could take a screenshot every five seconds, and hang the picture on your wall, as it could just as well be a piece of modern art, or excellent photography. Numerous times, the film makers used the elements earth, water and wind to symbolize certain things, but more strikingly, make very impressive images… The music was also very nice, which is why I’m downloading the soundtrack at the moment ;). I can definitely recommend this one as well… Who knows… I might even buy it.

Boy… Isn’t she gorgeous? :D
