Weekly Movie Reviews I
Since I watch quite a lot of movies these days (I just love my screen :P), I thought I’d better put all my movie reviews in one post and post them weekly ;). So here goes… The movies I watched since my last movie post are In America, Amélie, Der Untergang (Downfall) and La Vita è Bella (Life Is Beautiful).
I watched In America with my sister and her boy friend last Friday night. It received 3 Oscar nominations in 2002 for Best Original Screenplay, Best Female Actress in a Leading Role, Best Male Actor in a Supporting Role. It’s a movie about an Irish family migrating to New York and adjusting to the American life there. Unlike what you’d expect, the story isn’t really about adjusting to an American life, but more about the family itself. It’s a really nice both happy and sad story. Sometimes it feels like a fairy tale… All actors are performing extremely well, and the two little girls are just gorgeous :). There were a lot of moments for cheap sentiment in this movie, but it never went there. Really nice movie :).
My rating for In America: 8.5/10
Le Fabuleux Destin d’Amélie Poulain (Life Is Beautiful) is a wonderful 2001 movie about an innocent and naive girl in Paris, who has her own way of dealing with people and life. She tries to enjoy life as much as possible, up to the point where she finds enormous joy in just walking down the street. This movie is full of humor, sometimes even hilarious. For the most part it’s a human comedy… about love :).
My rating for Le Fabuleux Destin d’Amélie Poulain (Life Is Beautiful): 9/10
We watched Der Untergang (Downfall) with Annemarie, Egbert and Saskia this Wednesday. It’s a 2004 movie about the last days of Adolf Hitler in the Second World War. An intriguing movie this is, giving a perspective you’re not used to. I had heard that Hitler was portrayed in a very human way, but I must say that he still looks much like a monster sometimes… :|… But nevertheless it was an interesting movie, from which I learnt a few things I didn’t know before. The sound is also gorgeous btw… especially the DTS track on a surround system ;).
My rating for Der Untergang (Downfall): 8.5/10
I just watched La Vita è Bella (Life Is Beautiful) this evening with Femke and Saskia. It’s about a Jewish Italian father in the Second World War who is brought to a camp together with his son and his wife. In order to spare his son from trauma, he makes everything into a game for the boy. It’s intriguing how he succeeds in that. This is a nice example of a great movie with a lot of humor but with a very sad after taste.
My rating for La Vita è Bella (Life Is Beautiful): 9/10
