Hotel Rwanda

Two days ago I watched the Hotel Rwanda with my mom and sister. It was a really really nice movie. At several points during the movie the tears were close to welling up.

Hotel Rwanda is about the conflict between the Hutu’s and the Tutsi’s in the early 90’s. It shows how both parties generate more and more anger amongst each other, and it shows how the United Nations and Belgium turn away when the massacres start.

“When the world closed its eyes, he opened his arms.” - Hotel Rwanda Tagline

In the middle of all this is a hotel manager called Paul (played by Don Cheadle). He’s a Hutu but is married with a Tutsi wife. While trying to keep the image of his hotel high, he provides shelter for Tutsi’s on the run. Bribing the Hutu army, he attempts to save them from harm as long as possible…

This was definitely a very good movie, with great acting from Don Cheadle. And like my mom said, movies like this teach you a lot more about history than a history lesson in school does. This shows you the story from the perspective of the people involved, a perspective often forgotten…
